"100 Bricks"

Conceptual Art + Fine Art + Net Art = 100 Bricks
PHP Code + CSS
17th October 2006, June 2007, October 2011

This work arose in 2006, while exploring areas of the Internet which discuss art and art theory. I was greeted by the attitude that "conceptual art sucks". I have always felt ambivalent toward minimal and conceptual art. At that time I was still painting, and had been wondering how painting could be used in digital and/or network-based art. Without really striving for an answer I came up with this piece instead.

For this latest update in 2011, I have partly re-implemented 100 Bricks in Javascript. This means there's less to download from the server because the construction of the bricks is done in Javascript in the web browser. This also has the benefit of no longer requiring a page reload in order to re-arrange the current set of bricks (termed 'rebuild').

By the way, if either Javascript or CSS style sheets are disabled in your Internet browser you will not see any bricks at all!
